Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. The occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have more than doubled over the past 50 years due to the acceptance of it as a medical condition that is caused by unhealthy diet with high in saturated food. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women’s menstrual cycle, it effects a women’s physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how mineral - manganese helps to treat PMS.

I. Definition
Manganeses is a chemical element with symbol Mn and has atomic number 25. It has been found often in combination with ion. It also is a trace mineral that is present in very small amounts in the body. It has been used in aiding the formation of connective tissues.

II. How manganese effects women with PMS
1. Carbohydrate metabolism
Manganese aids the body in carbohydrate metabolism, thereby, increasing the the energy for our body daily activity needs. Deficiency of manganeses causes nervous tension such as fatigue, tiredness and drowsiness.

2. Blood sugar regulating
Besides helps in carbohydrate metabolism, it also helps to regulating the levels of sugar in the bloodstream by stimulating the production of right levels of insulin resulting in lessening the risk of food craving, over weight and diabetes for some women with PMS.

3. Aid in calcium absorption
Manganese also aids vitamin D in absorbing calcium resulting increasing the function of nervous system in controlling the muscle movement in the abdominal region and reduce the risk of menstrual pain and cramps. By increasing the levels of calcium in the body, it also reduce the risk of osteoporosis for some women with PMS.

4. Antioxidant
Manganese is a component of the antioxidant enzyme manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) that help to neutralize free radicals and prevent the forming as well thereby, increasing the immune function against the reproductive organs infection and inflammation.

5. Nervous system
It also helps to increase the fat and protein metabolism resulting in reducing symptoms of nervous tension including depression, anxiety and emotional and physical stress.

High levels of manganese in the brain may cause neurological disorders similar to Parkinson’s disease.
